I've recently been working on breaking my images down into themed categories, starting with the Northwest
Territories, to make it easier for the viewing public (that's you!) to find an image that
catches their eye. Categories such as "documentary" and "icebergs" coming soon!
On page 23 of the September/October issue of the great northern magazine, Above and Beyond,
is a montage of my images from this year's 25th Anniversay of the CBC True North Concert, held in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
It's rare that I watch that something that absolutely renders me speechless and inspires me to want to point others to it. Such was the case
when I recently finished watching Planet Earth, by the BBC.
This five-disc DVD set contains some of the most stunning video images of our earth and its inhabitants that I've ever seen, and there's no way you can watch this set and not feel inspired. Highly recommended.
I've mentioned several times in this space that the late Galen Rowell is one of my main photographic
inspirations. Well, recently I had the very profound experience of seeing dozens of his prints in
Galen Rowell: A Retrospective, an exhibit at the Royal Albert Museum
in Edmonton, Alberta that runs until the start of July, 2007. I strongly recommend this to anyone visiting Edmonton, and if you visit you'll
have the chance to see some of the most breath-taking landscape images that any photographer - past or present - has to offer.
Similar to my own story, Jason Steele
is an East Coast Canadian who headed north to the Canadian Arctic, and his website offers a great selection of photography from both
places. I encourage you to check out his work.
In 2007 a British acquaintance of mine, Ben Saunders,
will set out from the coast of Antarctica to make the first return journey to the South Pole on foot.
At 1,800 miles it will be the longest unsupported polar journey of all time. Please consider following the link
above and donating to his expedition.
My photo main inspirations are the late Galen Rowell and adventure photographer, Martin Hartley,
who took the above image of Ben. Published in National Geographic, the BBC, and Outdoor Photographer, I invite you to check out this
phemonenal force in photography.
