It's been a few months since my last newsletter, and so far 2007 has been a hectic - but great year. The sun is finally shining down on the streets of Yellowknife, turning a foot of ice into a foot of slush (at least on my own little side street), and I can almost sit outside in my shorts again, much to the terror of my neighbours.
Before I get into this month's contest details, I want to wish a quick congratulations to Alex Komarnitsky of Boulder, Colorado, who was last newsletter's winner of a 12x18 signed print of Active North. To enter this month's contest, read on!
If anyone happens to be in San Francisco over the next month or two, be sure to check out the Breakthrough
exhibition at the San Franciso Arts Commission Gallery. They will be exhibiting one of my night photography images,
Under The World.
The exhibition runs from April 20th to June 16th.
In addition, I encourage all fans of Canadian photography and photographers to consider ordering the inagural edition of Photosho magazine, available for order online. It features of my images from the High Arctic, titled Arctic Gaze, which features my wife, Erin, bundled up in full winter wear. The magazine features some stunning photography, and I promise you won't be disappointed!
Over the past few months I've been fortunate enough to attend some of the best winter events the North has to offer, and just experience the outdoors in every way I can. First of all, I witnessed my first Yukon Quest race, which is an epic dog sled racing from Whitehorse, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska. Following that I covered the very first Rock/Ice Ultra Marathon in Yellowknife for Above&Beyond magazine, which was amazing. In this "ultra" marathon - which makes regular marathons look like an afternoon job - participants race literally hundreds of miles over a week in some of the craziest temperatures the north has to offer. When I was out photographing on the ice (the start line was Frame Lake in downtown Yellowknife), it was about 35 below.
After the Rock/Ice Ultra wrapped up, the city held its annual Caribou Carnival, which is always a great time. In addition to a major dog sled race, it also hosts exciting snowmobile races, ice sculpture competitions, great food (there's something about sausage stands that calls my name... I can't quite place it), and many laughs.
Finally, I made a beautiful trek up the Coal Lake Trail outside of Whitehorse, Yukon, which was an approximate 10-kilometre snowshoe run up into the mountainous area around Mount Sima. This was one of the most stunning winter days I've experienced, and the sky was bluer than anything I've seen in quite some time. Then again, I live in Yellowknife - which is more darkness than light through the winter months.
Contest Details This month's contest - like most months' contests - couldn't be easier to enter. Just drop me an e-mail letting me know that you want to enter. Then, sometime over the next month or two I'll make a random drawing for the lucky winner. This month's prize is a 16x24 signed print of the winner's choice.
Thanks everyone, and until next time....
Dave
